Ministry that's more on-the-fly

This fall marks my third September where I'm not working in full-time ministry. It's been a very nostalgic experience as my ministry worker and student friends return to the campus for another beginning of the school year. I'm reading Fireseeds - of Spiritual Awakening, and finding my heart on-fire for personal and world-wide revival. I remember the lives I had the pleasure of seeing changed, and those that have been changed since. God has been so faithful to us!

Well presently, I am working at Starbucks. It's not very extravagant, but it allows me the space to influence many lives on a daily basis and to take time to consider what God's leading is for the future. It also allows me to give a lot of time to ministry at church, and to serve my community.

One of my favourite ways to minister to my friends, is through feasts! I love making dinners for my friends, and creating community around the dinner table. This Sunday I made breakfast for 11 people; we had pancakes, eggs and bacon, fruit, muffins, yogourt, and more! The pancakes were lemon, blueberry souflée from the Loney Spoons recipe book, and the eggs and bacon were baked in a muffin tin loosely based on this recipe.

This Saturday evening, I am having a smaller group of friends over to practice our français! In the spirit of the evening, I have decided to make Ratatouille, Vichyssoise, Tarte a la citrouille, and roti de porc aux herbes - served with wine, naturally! While devouring the delicious delights, we will be taking turns answering random, pre-selected questions. Each person will select the question of their choice. Some include: «dites nous un mémoire de tes années au secondaire», or «coke ou pepsi. prends un vote». The challenge is to answer the question in French, and get others to engage in the response. I am thinking of giving everyone a French name for the evening too, but only if we already know each other. Otherwise the priority is to get to know each others' real names. Pascal and Marie-France will be among my top picks!

As if that is not enough planning, I am also in charge of organizing the church Welcome! BBQ for this Sunday afternoon. I really do enjoy planning, and making things happen - so I was excited to suggest and organize the event. I know what it's like to be new, to move, and to seek community so I see this as a very valuable opportunity. We are planning hot-dogs and corn-on-the-cob, as well as the regular assortment of salads, deserts, and snacks. It should be a success!

A main ingredient to my weekly affair is co-ordinating the children's ministry at Grace Montreal Church. This week I get to meet someone who wants to start ministering in the nursery ministry - where we have started reaching out to the families with young children. I am excited to get to know this woman of God, and to see more families have the freedom to receive from the Word of God during the Sunday service!

Well, since I open the shop tomorrow, and have to leave home at 6:10am, I had better call it a night!

Rebecca
